Custom Gown Design Process

Custom Gown Design Process

CUSTOM dresses? The luxury of having your Custom-made wedding or a beautiful formal gown designed, creates the freedom to have what you really want.

Having custom-made dresses (bespoke dresses) created with couture techniques and quality fabric, not to mention handmade finishing for your garments/outfits, make you look unique and create a one-of-a-kind expression of who you are.

The estimate for custom work is based on cost of materials and how many hours of labor is put in.
Our labor includes:
unique design drafting,
pattern making,
the sewing process itself.

Basic bespoke dress/garment/jacket projects normally take a minimum of 10 hours. It can vary widely depending on fabric selection, style, and details. An estimate of the full cost will be provided upfront and should be agreed upon before any work begins. Bridal gown take over 80 hours to make. Special occasion, formal dress – over 40 hours.

Here at MILA Fashion, we listen to our clients soaking up their feedback and always focus our minds on creating a solution to help our customers to find the perfect dress and within their budget.

The custom dress design and making process takes from 1 to 3 months and prices start at $450 for a simple dress. See all prices here. Schedule your appointments in advance. Wait time is over 1 month.

Schedule an Appointment

How it works:

1 Consultation

Once you schedule an appointment with designer Iryna, you can start thinking what exactly you want from your dress: write down your ideas, save some gown photos, look through fashion magazines… Anything that can help you to realize your unique vision. Or you may have a clear picture in your mind of how your gown will look, or there may just be fragments of images you are drawn to. All of it is fine!

Brining Your Ideas to Life

Listening to your ideas during your custom dress design consultation, Iryna will help you bring to light the perfect silhouette, and you’ll be able to compare the drape, texture and shade of different fabric samples. On average, we will spend 1-2 hours with you discussing your idea. Iryna can meet you at your location within 30 mile radius of Reston, VA.

Following this meeting, you’ll receive a couple beautiful design sketches of your bespoke gown, fabric swatches, and details about our service booking for you to consider at home. This is where the fun really starts!

2 First Fitting

Once you decide too proceed with our bespoke design services, we can schedule your First Fitting with Iryna.
During this first fitting, Iryna takes your measurements  so that pattern drafting can begin.

Please note that all dresses are entirely bespoke, and with each dress being so different from another, it is impossible to stock a range available for trying on. But we will be happy to show some photos and a portfolio of our designs. This fitting takes about 45 mins to 1 hour.

A deposit of 50% is required so that work can begin.

If you live within 30 miles of Reston, Virginia area, fittings can take place at your home or workplace. Once the transformation is complete, the garment will be returned to you at the time of your convenience. A travel charge applies to this service.

Remember that while patterns and silhouette are still in progress, we can still build upon the design with tweaks and embellishments.

3 Second and Third Fittings

Depending on your design and fit requirements, two or more fittings will be required, where you will try a simple cotton fabric mockup of your dress to check fit of the dress, and decide upon further design features before cutting in fine fabrics which will be closer to the end of the process.

4 Final Check Fitting

A few weeks before your special date we will call you for a final fitting to make any adjustments to the fit of the dress.

Final payment is due at delivery.

Even if you are not local and cannot see us physically, we can do all of the above processes long distance.

1. At your fittings, it is important to wear your special day lingerie to see the effect they have on the shape of your body, and the shape of your dress.

2. Shoes are equally as important to bring along to make sure the hem length can be correctly calculated for your bespoke dresses.

3. Iryna can also design beautiful shoe accessories and gorgeous bridal accessories to match your gown! Just ask!

A few tips for you

  • Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what you want from your bespoke dresses.
  • Showing me a range of inspirations that you like, from shapes to textures and details. The inspirations can be from anywhere, and you can pick a detail from one dress, a color from another … it will all make sense in the end.
  • Love your body. Ok, that can be harder than it sounds, but it really is a good piece of advice. Not once have I ever agreed when a bride has told me their body hang-ups.
  • Don’t try to hide your body, or hide the parts you don’t like, Instead, enhance the parts you love.
  • Bring a trusted friend with you to fittings for good advice.

And even more:

  • I will give you my honest and professional advice, but nobody knows you better than you.
  • Bring only a handful of friends to avoid conflicting opinions.
  • Your choice is final. Your bespoke dresses are for you.
  • Please strive to meet all of your scheduled fittings to ensure the smooth running of the timetable for creating your dress.
  • Due to the nature of having a dress made, scheduled fittings may be a little irregular. There are certain points where I may need longer to create certain details. And some times where I need only a short while to tweak fit before I need to see you again. I may not cut the ‘real’ fabrics until closer to your wedding date to avoid big alterations to the final dress.
  • Try to think about your wedding day undies as soon as you can to make sure the fit of your dress is perfected early, (then we can focus on the pretty bits).
  • Think about your wedding shoes too! I will mostly leave a final hem length until the last minute to give as much time as possible to choose.
  • Please be understanding that I have other brides who I am busy working with bespoke dresses with who must receive the same due care and attention.
  • Weight loss is not a problem. Because your dress design is made in stages, especially for you, alterations can be made quite easily in most cases, especially during the toile stages. I prefer not to make extensive alterations to the final dress as it may jeopardize the final design of bespoke dresses.
